The dessert is simple enough in concept: it’s a cake covered in frosting and dipped in nonpareil sprinkles (the round dots). The official Dotcakes comes from a bakery in New York. In addition to the now-famed style of the Dotcake cup, which start at $10, they also make 9 inch and 12 inch round cakes with intricate design options that start at $55.

Because the bakery is only in New York, they do offer shipping across the country but stop during the warmer months. Many have begun DIYing their own Dot Cakes. Using either box mix or store bought cakes they grab a small cup or bowl and fill it with cake and a layer of frosting before dunking it into a bowl of sprinkles.

Susie Cakes in Southern California quickly jumped on the trend by selling DIY kits which include four of its vanilla cupcakes as well as a tub of vanilla buttercream frosting and rainbow “dot” nonpareil sprinkles for just under $30.

Elsewhere other bakeries across Southern California have added their own spin on Dot Cakes to their menus, with some coffee shops selling Dot Cake lattes and ice cream shops selling Dot Cake sundaes and ice cream cakes.
