Los Alamitos’ boys golf team didn’t have experience at the CIF State championships to lean on as it played a challenging course for California supremacy.
The Griffins appeared in the finals for the first time on Wednesday but proved to be fast learners.
Sophomore Levi Reilly shot a 3-under-par 68 at San Gabriel Country Club to place second and lead the Sunset League champion to a third-place finish in the team competition.
Los Alamitos carded an 18-over-par score of 373 to edge Sunny Hills by one stroke for third place.
The San Gabriel course played so difficult that no team shot under par. Stevenson from the Central Coast Section defended its team with a 1-over-par 356. De La Salle of Concord placed second at 368.

“The course was set up really tough,” Los Alamitos coach John Haygood said. “We played OK.”
Reilly was one of only nine players to finish under-par.
He recorded five birdies and two bogeys in finishing two shots behind individual champion Drue Sanchez of De La Salle (66).
Los Alamitos featured a tight pack behind Reilly. Sophomore Akinobu Yano and junior Brandon Bae each shot 75 while junior Seth Thao carded a 76.
Senior Sean Yi added a 79.
Anaheim Discovery Christian’s Keita Yobiko carded 1-under-par 70 to finish seventh.
Felipe Jikal paced Sunny Hills with an even-par 71. The Lancers entered the final as SoCal’s top team after winning the CIF-SCGA SoCal regional title for the first time since 2013.
