Jaslene Massey realized something special was happening when saw her hand in her field of vision.

“I knew,” Massey said. “When I watched my hand complete the technique, I knew it was good.”

“It” was the discus. The third of her six attempts at the CIF State Track and Field Championships traveled 196 feet, 4 inches. That set a California high school girls record and, of course, earned her the state championship in the event.

The mark was the best in the nation for the 2026 high school season.

Massey also won in the shot put at the state meet with a mark of 52 feet, 9 inches. Her season best of 53-2 is the second-best mark in the girls shot put in Orange County history.

Pursuing records was never her goal in the shot put or discus. Getting technique right, like seeing her hand where it was on that record-setting discus throw, was the goal.

“What mark I might get always stays in the back of my mind,” Massey said. “The focus is always on technique.”

Her state-meet discus throw broke her own Orange County record (188-7) she set in March.

Her throws coach, Mike O’Dell, said Massey, who got her sports start in figure skating, is perfectly suited for the shot put and discus.

Her throws coach, Mike O’Dell, said Massey, who got her sports start in figure skating, is perfectly suited for the shot put and discus.

“She has very quick and explosive motions,” said O’Dell who has coached several CIF Southern Section and state champions. “Translating that to the discus has been a long process. It’s a ‘feeling’ thing and for a while she didn’t have that feeling. Getting that feeling and learning how she is supposed to move when throwing the discus was a big breakthrough for her.”

Massey, headed for the University of Oregon, also displayed her overall athleticism with an early-season leap of 17 feet, 2 inches in the long jump. That was the 14th-best mark in the county this season.

In the days after her state-meet performance, she still was astonished by her record-setting discus throw.

“What happened at the state meet, I still can’t wrap my head around that,” Massey said.

“She’s one of a kind,” O’Dell said. “That’s for sure.”
