ANAHEIM — La Habra’s Acen Jimenez and Orange Lutheran’s Makena Cook were named Orange County high school male and female athletes of the year by the Orange County Sports Commission on Thursday.

The announcements were made at the Orange County Sports Awards at Angel Stadium.

Jimenez, The Register’s Orange County player of the year in boys basketball this past season, beat out male finalists Trent Mosley of Santa Margarita football and Luke Fahey of Mission Viejo football.

Jimenez is committed to Dartmouth College.

Cook, an All-County quarterback in flag football and soccer player, emerged over female finalists Amalia Holguin of Sage Hill basketball and Jaslene Massey of Aliso Niguel track and track, and volleyball.

Cook recently transferred to Sierra Canyon for her senior year.

In other awards, Hall of Fame basketball player Ann Meyers Drysdale (Sonora) and world-record setting swimmer Aaron Peirsol (Newport Harbor) received the Legacy and Icon awards, respectively.

Natalie Nakase (Marina) of the Golden State Valkyries earned coach of the year over finalists Carson Palmer of Santa Margarita football and Russ Davis of Vanguard women’s basketball.

Kaylee Byon (Rosary) of Vanguard basketball was a finalist for female college athlete of the year, which went to  UC Irvine basketball player Hunter Hernandez.
