French’s Pastry Bakery, known for its Wagon Wheel pastry, announced it will close its Orange location, with the final day of service set for Friday, June 26.

The Orange space opened in 2005; the bakery did not provide a reason for the closure.

“I’m so sorry you’re closing another store,” replied one fan on the bakery’s social media. “I really miss the one in Mission Viejo. We got my mom‘s birthday cake there every year. You made it special for her.”

Another regular chimed in, saying, “I hope you never have to close the one in Costa Mesa it’s sad we’re losing such great small bakeries.”

First opened in Costa Mesa in 1965, French’s Pastry Bakery was purchased by the Gonzalez family in 1990 from namesake owner Frank French, who retired after running the business for nearly three decades. Since taking over, the bakery was named Best Bakery in 2019 and 2020 in the Orange County Register’s Best of Orange County reader poll.

French’s Pastry Bakery closed its Mission Viejo and Irvine locations in 2023 and 2024, respectively. The original Costa Mesa location will remain open.

The bakery makes its litany of baked goods onsite, including breads, cakes, cookies and Wagon Wheels, the bakery’s popular oversized pastry that resembled a circular Danish and measures a whopping 12 inches in diameter. Its also known for bread-pudding cakes made from day-old Danish.
