One person is in custody following a shooting at a Northern California library that left two people dead and one other injured late Monday afternoon.

Chico Chief of Police Billy Aldridge confirmed the first fatality with the Enterprise-Record at 6:30 p.m. PT and, 20 minutes later, confirmed a second victim had also died. Additionally, one juvenile was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. No identifications have been released as of 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

According to Aldridge, a call came in at 5:12 p.m. with the reporting party saying shots were fired inside the Chico Library, which was later confirmed. The gunshots could also be heard during the call, along with screaming.

At about 9 p.m. on Monday, Chico police said in a news release that its officers had arrived on the scene at about 5:18 p.m. and entered the library through the front doors shortly after.

Aldridge said the suspect attempted to escape from the back of the library but was ultimately apprehended without any shots fired between the suspect and officers.

No information has been provided on the motive of the shooter, the name of the suspect or the type of gun used, though it was confirmed that it was a single firearm.

In its Monday night news release, Chico police said they plan to release the victims’ names Tuesday morning after notification of next of kin is complete.

Chico police reported a “large presence of emergency personnel” in the area of Sherman Avenue and East Third Avenue late Monday afternoon in a post on the department’s Facebook page.

The post, originally posted at 5:12 p.m., was later updated to read “One suspect in custody: no information to lead us to believe there is an ongoing threat.”

“(This) incident was a very sad day for this community,” Aldridge said.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation offered its services, and the Butte County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Butte County District Attorney’s Office, will assist with the investigation going forward.

Personnel from Cal Fire, Chico Police, the Chico Fire Department, Butte County Sheriff’s Office and detectives responded, according to Chico Police.

Chico is about 85 miles northwest of Sacramento.
