A 2-year-old boy died Thursday, July 16 after investigators say he found a gun hidden between the seat cushions of a couch and accidentally shot himself inside a Highland home.

Deputies responded around 5:30 p.m. to a residence in the 6900 block of Victoria Street after receiving a report of a child who had been shot, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
The boy was taken to a hospital, where he died shortly afterward, the Sheriff’s Department said.
Investigators determined the child gained access to the firearm that had been hidden between two couch seat cushions and shot himself, the department said.

Authorities said the child’s mother, 20-year-old Jamaria Cobb of Highland, and her boyfriend, 52-year-old Armand Bright of Highland, were inside the home when the shooting occurred. If was unclear if he was the child’s father.
A second child inside the home was taken into protective custody by Child and Family Services, officials said.
Cobb and Bright were arrested on suspicion of child abuse causing great bodily injury or death. Both were booked into the Central Detention Center, where they are being held on $1.35 million bail, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
