The owner of a stalled construction project in West Hollywood where a pack of coyotes has taken up residence was expected Wednesday to begin the process of finding wildlife experts to handle the situation at the property that many neighbors are calling the “coyote condos.”

Construction of a new 22-unit condominium building at 939-949 Spaulding Ave. halted in 2024, according to a statement by the city of West Hollywood, and permits previously issued by the City’s Building and Safety Division have since expired.
“The City’s Neighborhood and Business Safety Division, which oversees animal care and control services in West Hollywood, has been in contact with the property owner’s representative to seek immediate action,” West Hollywood said in a statement on its website. “As with any privately owned property, the owner is responsible for maintaining the site. The City is requiring the property owner to promptly retain a wildlife control operator that specializes in humane wildlife management to assess the site and recommend appropriate next steps.”
The project site is approximately 19,500-square-feet and spans four parcels.
Video from numerous sources, including broadcast news and social media, showed the canines on various levels of the building, sending up a cacophony of howls and yips. Coyotes can be seen socializing, sleeping and denning in the condominiums.

City officials acknowledged that concerned residents have complained about the unchecked situation at the condominium inhabited by coyotes.
The city said it follows a comprehensive Coyote Management and Coexistence Plan that prioritizes non-lethal management practices. It added that it is also coordinating with the Los Angeles County Agricultural Commissioner, which is the primary county-level department that serves to track coyote sightings.
City officials said they will provide public updates to the situation and next steps that are implemented by the property owner.
In the meantime, area residents are being advised to refrain from feeding the animals and to keep a close watch on their pets.
