Thousands packed Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica, Calif. Saturday to watch the annual World Dog Surfing Championships. Small, medium, large, and even extra large four-legged surfers took to the waves.

The competition, which was originally called the “Small Wave Surf Dog Competition,” began in 2006. A portion of the proceeds of this event go to dog, surfing and environmental nonprofits.

According to its website, “The World Championships for Dog Surfing are based on the California coast — where the concept for the sport originated — bringing together dog surfing talent.  Dog surfers are invited to bring home the gold for charity.”
