The Lake Forest-based chain brought that point home this week with a new item it calls the All-American Burgertaco.
It’s a cheeseburger with two meat patties, tomato, lettuce and sauce folded in flatbread to look like a soft taco. It costs about $5.99 alone or $9.99-$10.89 in a combo with fries and a soft drink.
In a news release, Del Taco representatives call the limited-time burger a “one-of-a-kind mashup.”
The Burgertaco is essentially the reverse of the Bun Taco, which was a core menu item when the chain was founded in the early 1960s. It used to be widely available but is now only offered in a few locations such as Barstow and as a “not-so-secret menu item.” It features ground taco beef on a sesame seed hamburger bun with a tomato slice, shredded cheese, and shredded lettuce.

The Burgertaco is not all that’s new at Del Taco. Select restaurants in Riverside, Corona and Colton are testing Scorcho Queso cheese dip, based on Del Scorcho, one of Del Taco’s hot sauces, according to a Facebook post.
An online menu for the drive-thru at 1255 University Ave., Riverside, lists items such as Scorcho Queso Crispy Chicken Burritos, $4.99; Scorcho Queso Loaded Nachos with beef or chicken, $7.99-$8.39; Scorcho Queso Seasoned Fries, $3.79, or Loaded Fries, $6.49; Scorcho Queso Beef Rollers, $2.49; and Scorcho Queso chips, $3.39.
Del Taco is also spotlighting its Dirty Del sodas, available in five flavors.
Other limited-time items at Del Taco include carnitas burritos, tacos, tortas and fries.
