HUNTINGTON BEACH — Huntington Beach’s football team will likely hold an advantage at quarterback over most opponents. That is the reality when the snaps feed a four-year starter who is committed to Ohio State.
But it takes more than a strong-armed, Elite 11 passer to beat quality foes.
The Oilers showed Thursday that they feature several playmakers to support quarterback Brady Edmunds.
Running back Dallas Miller and cornerback Dylin Bruce made explosive plays and defensive end Evan Scruggs supplied the pass rush as the Oilers raced past reigning CIF-SS Division 2 champion Los Alamitos 31-15 in their home-opener at Huntington Beach High.
Edmunds passed for 160 yards and a touchdown as the No. 14 Oilers (2-0) beat the No. 17 Griffins (0-2) for the first time since 2012.
Edmunds tossed a 31-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Kye Crump to ignite a 21-point outburst in the first quarter. Edmunds’ teammates then kicked in the big plays.
Miller, a transfer from Mission Viejo, broke a 68-yard run to the Los Alamitos 2 in the middle of the first quarter. One play later, the senior scored on a run as the Oilers pushed their lead to 14-0.
On the ensuing possession, Bruce halted a Kamden Tillis-powered drive by returning an interception 76 yards for a touchdown. Bruce, who is committed to Arizona State, jumped in front of a third-and-7 pass for his second interception in as many games.
“Anybody can take it from 80 yards,” said Miller, who rushed for a career-high 127 yards on 19 carries. “All of our guys are explosive. They might not be the tallest but they can for sure make a guy miss. They know how to get open. … I think Brady is happy about that.”

Scruggs forced an incompletion on a near-sack on a third-and-10 from the Huntington Beach 33 late in the first half.
The play loomed significant as Huntington Beach forced another incompletion on fourth down to give the ball back to Edmunds with 1:22 left. Edmunds then dodged a rusher to complete a 49-yard pass to Skylar Robinson to set up a 32-yard field goal Malachi Newmaster on the final play of the first half.
Huntington Beach led 31-7 at intermission.
Scruggs remained disruptive in the second half. The senior recovered a fumble at the Oilers’ 17. He later had a tackle for loss and a sack.
Huntington Beach’s Charlie Stubin added an interception for a secondary that played without college commits Jimmel Champion (Wyoming) and Gianni Portfilio (Purdue).
“This feels great,” Scruggs said of the victory. “As a family, we’re so close. We’re hanging out together outside of football. … That really is the thing that gets us together as one and playing on the same page.”
Los Alamitos started Elijah McDaniel at quarterback but turned in its second series to Luke Osborn, who played most of the game. Osborn threw a 17-yard touchdown to a leaping Jacob Sanchez with 4:53 left in the half.
Tillis rushed for 73 yards on 12 carries.
Next week, Huntington Beach plays at Long Beach Wilson (0-1) on Sept. 4. Los Alamitos play host to Serra (0-1) on the same day.
