BUENA PARK — Sunny Hills used long drives that mixed runs and passes, and was impenetrable on defense for a 21-0 nonleague victory over Kennedy on Friday at Buena Park High School.

Lancers quarterback Owen Zeiler was an efficient 15 of 25 passing for 172 yards and two touchdowns, and he led scoring drives of 50, 40 and 68 yards.
Because of the time-consuming drives, the Lancers (2-1) limited the Fighting Irish (1-2) to seven possessions in the game.
The Sunny Hills defense also forced three-and-out possessions on four Kennedy drives.
“Our defense held us in the game the entire time,” Sunny Hills coach Luis Cruz said. “Every single player on defense, from the defensive line to the linebackers, the defensive backs … they all came together as a unit.”
After a first quarter in which the teams combined for five punts and two turnovers on downs, the Lancers found some traction in the second quarter.
On a drive that started at the 50, Zeiler guided the Lancers down the field, completing a 7-yard pass to Tua Burgess, a 19-yard pass to Bryan Inzunza and an 18-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Belleville for the game’s first score.
In their first possession of the third quarter, the Lancers capped a six-play, 40-yard drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass from Zeiler to Bryan Inzunza.

“The first half was rough,” Zeiler said. “At halftime, we just said we’ve got to keep battling. Don’t let them score and keep moving the ball down the field.”
In arguably the key drive of the game, the Lancers led 14-0 early in the fourth quarter and ran a fake punt on a fourth-and-1 from the Sunny Hills 35.
Justin Covarrubius, the punter, ran for five yards to keep the Lancers’ drive alive.
Sunny Hills drove to the Kennedy 13, when Inzunza scored his second touchdown, this one on a 13-yard run that basically put the game out of reach.
The Fighting Irish drove into the red zone in the final minutes before the clock ran out to preserve the shutout.
“When we were up 7-0, we went into halftime and we talked about it,” Inzunza said. “(Coach Cruz) changed our mindset. After that, we kept it rolling, we kept it rolling and we kept it rolling.”
