BOSTON — Reid Detmers and Patrick Sandoval, who shared a clubhouse for years, are going to share the mound on Tuesday.

Detmers and Sandoval were Angels teammates from 2021 through 2024. Sandoval is now back from surgery and pitching in the Boston Red Sox rotation.
“It’s going to be fun,” Detmers said. “I haven’t put a whole lot of thought into it. I’ve got other stuff to worry about, but it’s going to be fun.”
Since they were both in the Angels’ rotation in 2024, they’ve taken different paths. Detmers, of course, spent much of 2024 in Triple-A. He came back last year as a reliever, and this year as a starter, with a run of dominant outings in the second half.
Sandoval’s 2024 season ended in June because of elbow surgery. He had hoped to return last season, but he didn’t make it into the Boston rotation until July, just after the Red Sox were in Anaheim. He has a 4.41 ERA in 10 starts.
“I didn’t realize how much of an adjustment it would be once I got here,” Sandoval said. “You go through rehab outings and you think you’ll be ready, but then you get to the big leagues and it’s a totally different ballgame.”
The Angels first acquired Sandoval in a 2018 trade for Martin Maldonado, and he reached the majors in 2019. He was a fixture in the Angels rotation from early 2021 until he got hurt. Sandoval started exactly 100 games for the Angels. Sandoval said pitching against the Angels will be an experience, even though the lineup won’t bear much resemblance to what the Angels had when he was there in 2024.
“I’m definitely thankful for everything they did for me over there,” Sandoval said. “I’m excited to strap it up against them.”
Sandoval said he still has a text thread with Detmers and Griffin Canning, who is now with the Padres.

Sandoval, who grew up in Orange County, also said he was happy to hear the news about the sale of the team from Arte Moreno to Stan Kroenke.
“That’s huge news for everyone, fans, players,” Sandoval said. “It should be good. Exciting times, for sure.”
NOTES
First baseman Nolan Schanuel (strained intercostal muscle) continues to do baseball activity. Suzuki said they are “hoping” he’ll begin a rehab assignment by the end of the week. Last week Schanuel said he hoped to join the Angels sometime on this trip, but that now seems like it was overly optimistic. …
Right-hander Sam Bachman (nerve inflammation) has what Suzuki called “normal soreness” after his rehab outing at Class-A Rancho Cucamonga. He is expected to pitch again “later this week.” …
Mike Trout was at DH for the second straight day, which Suzuki said was because of having a day game immediately after a night of travel. …
Kyren Paris got the start in center field on Monday, his first start since he was added to the roster last Tuesday. Paris figures to get more playing time through the rest of the week because the Angels are scheduled to face left-handed starters in three of the next four games.
