Orange Lutheran shut out Serra 35-0 in a nonleague game Friday, holding the Cavaliers to 107 yards and forcing them to punt five times.
Orange Lutheran (3-1) handed Serra (2-2) its sixth consecutive loss in the series, a streak that dates to 2021.
“It was not our finest hour,” Serra coach Scott Altenberg said. “We just weren’t very competitive tonight, and it’s not something you can normally say about us.”
Serra gained seven yards on its first play from scrimmage on a run by A.J. McBean, but Orange Lutheran quickly began closing the running lanes. The Lancers stopped McBean for a 3-yard loss on the next play, and Serra eventually turned the ball over at its 39-yard line.
“They were filling gaps really quick, from start to finish,” McBean said. “Even before I got the handoff they were filling gaps. We tried to change things at halftime and they adjusted with us.”
McBean finished with 53 yards on 10 carries, including 29 yards in the first half.
Serra played without five defensive starters, including defensive backs Pole Moala, Wesley Ace and Lamor Roberson, linebacker Andre Ferrira and defensive lineman Ashton Hope.
Orange Lutheran took advantage behind quarterback Reagan Toki and running back Ryan Christianson.
Toki completed two passes on the Lancers’ opening drive, while Christianson had runs of 17, 4 and 3 yards. The two connected on an 8-yard touchdown pass with 7:17 remaining in the first quarter.
Serra went backward on its next possession, and a 9-yard punt gave Orange Lutheran favorable field position. Toki connected with Chris Flores Jr. for a 19-yard gain before scoring on a 4-yard run to extend the lead to 14-0 with 4:55 remaining in the first quarter.

Ikeem Crawford’s 30-yard kickoff return gave Serra better field position at its 38-yard line on the ensuing possession. McBean gained 10 yards before Ryan Bose caught a 6-yard pass that moved the Cavaliers into Orange Lutheran territory.
Serra advanced no farther than the Lancers’ 46 and punted again.
“We couldn’t get it right,” Altenberg said. “Like we would move the ball a little bit and then we’d kinda turn the wrong way or something would come in backward and then and that was it.”
Orange Lutheran responded with another scoring drive. Toki connected with Flores for 27 yards before Christianson broke loose for a 31-yard run to the Serra 18.
Braeden Alan Bross-Quibuyen capped the 73-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown to give Orange Lutheran a 21-0 lead with 11:54 remaining in the second quarter.
“Our offensive line is great. (Texas commit) Lucas Rhoa balled out,” Christianson said. “Mario Luna, he’s a guard playing tackle right now, he’s balling out. Everyone on the interior is balling out. It’s just great to see all my guys come out here and just do great.”
Christianson rushed for 98 yards in the first half and finished with 107 yards, including a touchdown that extended Orange Lutheran’s lead to 28-0 early in the third quarter. He also had 41 receiving yards.
Flores finished with six receptions for 112 yards.
Toki threw for 109 yards and a touchdown before being replaced by sophomore Ezrah Brown with 2:10 remaining in the first half.
McBean said the loss could provide motivation as Serra moves deeper into its schedule. The Cavaliers host Oaks Christian next Friday before opening Mission League play against Bishop Amat on Oct. 2. Both dates match Serra’s published schedule.
“We’re battle-tested, and again I think once we have all our guys back, I feel like we’re gonna be a great squad,” McBean said. “We have resilience and we’re just gonna get better from this.”
Altenberg did not have a timetable for the return of the injured defensive players. Serra also lost defensive back Ke’maury Modkins during the game.
