UCLA football lost the rushing battle. The Bruins began just two drives beyond their own 25-yard line. Penalty flags disrupted the flow of play. A backup quarterback started, and UCLA faced 20 total third downs.

None of it mattered. Not with Chesney pushing the buttons.

No. 12 UCLA defeated Wisconsin 17-7 on Saturday at the Rose Bowl. An ugly victory under the beautiful San Gabriel Mountains.

Chesney continued the historic start to his tenure as the first-ever first-year UCLA head coach to start with six wins.

Aggravation replaced his composure on the sideline as he complained to officials and his players about the eight penalties the Bruins (6-0, 4-0 Big Ten) committed. Many of which erased positive plays.

But the Bruins showed composure in overcoming those penalties to keep drives alive. They converted 13 of those 20 third-down situations. Each of their three scores came on marches of 90 or more yards.

For the first time in 2026, UCLA’s defense failed to force a turnover. The unit was stellar, regardless, holding Wisconsin quarterback Colton Joseph to six completions on 16 attempts for 66 yards. He was effective on the ground, but the Badgers (4-2, 2-1) committed 10 penalties, regularly pushing themselves out of field-goal range.

UCLA quarterback Ty Dieffenbach continued to step up, completing 22 of 33 passes for 264 yards. Wide receiver Semaj Morgan was his favorite target, with five catches for 84 yards.

Running back Wayne Knight’s string of 100-yard games ended, but he still found the end zone for his Big Ten-leading 11th touchdown.

With Knight struggling, it took the Bruins — who entered the game with the sixth-best rushing game in FBS (253.2 yards per game) — 47 minutes to break off a rush of double-digit yards.

But with 12:43 remaining in the game, running back Anthony Woods broke free for a 14-yard run. On the following play, he scored from 3 yards out to put the Bruins up 10, an insurmountable deficit for against the UCLA defense.

Those were the only points UCLA scored in the second half. And with the standards the Bruins’ offense has set this season, it was a struggle.

But they controlled possession with those long drives.

In the first half, they scored after starting on their own 9- and 10-yard line

On the first drive, UCLA picked up third downs with its run game. Then Dieffenbach connected with Jalen Saint-Paul on a third-and-6 to push the Bruins well within field-goal range.

On the second drive, Dieffenbach hit Semaj Morgan on a crossing route, and Morgan turned it upfield for 31 yards to convert a third-and-6. Dieffenbach found Wayne Knight in the flat and rifled one into Brian Rowe Jr. on a deep hitch to overcome the next two third-down situations.

Three plays later, facing a third-and-5 from the 14-yard line, Saint-Paul motioned from wideout into the backfield, got past a linebacker on an option route and ran down to the 1-yard line. Knight scored out of Wildcat formation on the following play.

After a first half defined by success on third down, UCLA tried a trick play on facing a third-and-13 on its first possession of the second half. Morgan chucked a ball into double coverage and it was deflected and intercepted by Wisconsin’s Marvin Burks Jr.

Wisconsin capitalized, rushing the ball on 10 of its next 11 plays to go 60 yards for a touchdown. It was an innovative ground-and-pound approach as Joseph kept the ball on speed options around both edges and ran draws up the middle. The Badgers called end arounds and inverted runs to receivers. Joseph capped off the drive with a 4-yard run for the score.

That short drive, set up by a mistake by the offense, was the most significant lapse for UCLA. Otherwise, the Bruins controlled a game that was rather ugly.

This wasn’t the rushing barrage against Cal or the second-half breakout against San Diego State. The offense didn’t touch 500 yards as it did against Purdue. The defense didn’t force any turnovers after getting a combined 12 out of Maryland and Oregon.

No. This was a gritty win.

An experience any team with College Football Playoff aspirations needs to endure.
