The intersection remained closed for several hours as Newport Beach police traffic investigators examined the scene.
Preliminary evidence indicates the Toyota Corolla was traveling westbound on San Miguel Drive approaching MacArthur Boulevard when, for unknown reasons, the car collided with several vehicles stopped at a red light, according to investigators.
The impact pushed an Audi Q5 into the intersection, where it collided with a Nissan that was turning from eastbound San Miguel Drive onto northbound MacArthur Boulevard, police said.
