The threat of a blast causing widespread destruction and a toxic cloud has resulted in tens of thousands of residents of Garden Grove and neighboring cities being ordered to evacuate their homes, with no clear end in sight.

U.S. Rep. Derek Tran, whose district includes the evacuated area, called for a “deep investigation” into the situation at GKN Aerospace, a manufacturer of parts for commercial and military aircraft. Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer has created a tip line for insiders to probe what may have led to the crisis.

A half dozen law firms have said they will file lawsuits seeking class-action status for victims.

The GKN statement:

We continue to monitor the condition of the affected material and are working round the clock to mitigate the risk of a leak.

We are acutely aware of the uncertainty this incident is causing and sincerely apologise (sic) for the ongoing disruption to the local community.
