The take-home essay is dead. So are lockers. And, probably, physical textbooks, too.<\/p>\n

But for Maria Poveromo, a soon-to-be Woodbridge High School graduate, some academic cliches still ring true.<\/p>\n

With graduation right around the corner, Poveromo, 18, is saying \u201cbye\u201d to childhood friends and daring to start anew across the country at Fordham University in New York, where she\u2019ll study political science and international relations. She\u2019s equipped with a hefty financial aid package and a broad-brush vision of what her post-high school life will look like.<\/p>\n

She has a sense of the world she is bracing to inherit, one made uncertain by AI\u2019s trajectory, political polarization, rising costs and slimming job markets. She\u2019s been told what to expect, but Poveromo says she doesn\u2019t really know what the future holds for her generation.<\/p>\n

The answer, she suggests, lies in what Gen Z has forsaken.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know one kid at my entire school that uses their locker to put textbooks in. Everything\u2019s online,\u201d Poveromo said. \u201cIt\u2019s really embarrassing, but I think it says a lot about my generation.\u201d<\/p>\n

If lockers are long gone, then naturally, Poveromo adds, so are print books. Apple pens and iPads are the modern-day pen and paper among her Woodbridge peers \u2013 \u201ceverybody\u2019s using them to take notes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chapman University professor and Fletcher Jones Foundation Endowed Chair in Free Speech Vikki Katz calls the world high schoolers are graduating into a \u201cperiod of transition and rapid innovation and development.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

The stakes aren\u2019t trivial. A generation\u2019s confidence is on the line.<\/p>\n

In this moment, she said, \u201cIt feels like AI has shaken the foundations of all the things they were told\u201d and distorted the idea of \u201cyou\u2019ll go to a good college and everything will be mapped out for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

At this age, a student\u2019s confidence is in \u201ctheir trust in their unique view of the world. And for young people, it feels like that\u2019s missing right now,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to make sure that we\u2019re creating infrastructures and incentives for young people that enable them to slow down, where the world is working to speed things up,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

For Katz, \u201cslowing down\u201d includes honing in on developing students\u2019 soft skills and teaching them to engage in civil discourse \u2014 abilities she saw dampened by students spending some of\u00a0their formative years in quarantine and communicating over their devices. It is also about designing classrooms where \u201cface-to-face conversations\u201d reign and the reliance on AI is controlled.<\/p>\n

In this digital age, and perhaps foreshadowing for the graduating Class of 2026, Katz\u2019s colleagues at Chapman are shifting toward \u201chands-on\u201d learning, reverting to blue books for tests, pens and paper for notes \u2014 frameworks that deter cheating and \u201creward the process of understanding rather than an outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to spend more time in class engaged in meaningful activities that students can do interactively,\u201d she said. \u201cSo from my vantage point, the take-home essay is dead.\u201d<\/p>\n

Honest work<\/h4>\n

Fountain Valley High School senior Andy Ngo uses AI every day.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think every student in high school has used AI,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd if they (say they) haven\u2019t, they\u2019re lying.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s not a single day where I don\u2019t use the internet, so there\u2019s not a single day where I don\u2019t get in contact with AI,\u201d he said, adding that with even simple Google searches, he\u2019s met with AI responses.<\/p>\n

Ngo\u2019s behavior is not unusual. In a Gallup survey published in April of 1,572 members of Gen Z, about half of the 14- to-29-year-olds said they use AI either daily or weekly, and just 19% said they never use it.<\/p>\n

Ngo, 17, is headed to UC Irvine this fall to study bioengineering. For the son of two immigrants, college was always on the mind: \u201cFor immigrant families, it\u2019s the No. 1 model. You\u2019ve got to go to school, work hard and just live a stable life,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

But AI, he said, is changing the equation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to say a degree is useless, but with AI, a lot of degrees are losing their value to me,\u201d Ngo said, referring to posts he\u2019s seen on TikTok and Instagram flagging \u201cnon-safe\u201d paths, such as communications, degrees that are business-related or \u201canything too easy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople will not hire somebody to make phone calls and outreach or create a website or send emails,\u201d Ngo said. On the other hand, \u201cbuilding a product or even blue-collar work, like construction, cannot be replaced by AI.\u201d<\/p>\n

His own intended major, Ngo said, is not invulnerable. He is undecided on a career \u2014 though interested in developing prosthetics \u2014\u00a0but already he\u2019s expecting the hunt for internships and early-career jobs to become increasingly competitive.<\/p>\n

Ngo is \u201csuper anxious\u201d about AI\u2019s progression and its implications on a college education, but said he also can\u2019t risk ignoring AI and \u201cfalling behind.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn education, or maybe in general, people will score higher than you or get more success because they use AI and you do it by yourself,\u201d he said. And \u201cwith AI developing, it feels very demoralizing to do honest work because everybody around here is shortcutting their way.\u201d<\/p>\n

His anxiety isn\u2019t isolated.<\/p>\n

While Gen Z\u2019s use of AI has remained steady compared to 2025, according to the Gallup survey, disillusionment with AI has significantly risen. Gen Zers\u2019 \u201chopefulness\u201d about AI fell from 27% to 18% in the last year, while \u201canger\u201d increased from 22% to 31%.<\/p>\n

Katz, of Chapman University, says AI nurtures a \u201cconfidence problem\u201d for Gen Z.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe way assignments are structured, I suspect the worry isn\u2019t about falling behind because AI is so clever,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s that they think AI might have better answers than them.\u201d<\/p>\n

As educators, \u201cwe need to make sure that the assignments we give do not inadvertently incentivize people to be using AI instead of engaging in the worthy struggles to really figure it out themselves,\u201d Katz said. \u201cBut as long as we\u2019ve got AI at our desks, the harder it will be for them to do that. Every time they do a Google search, they\u2019re gonna see an AI summary at the top, and that\u2019s before they open ChatGPT to help them with a specific assignment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Poveromo can\u2019t say for certain what \u201cethical AI-using\u201d will look like in her future classrooms. But she expects it might resemble her current habits, though she believes she\u2019s an outlier: \u201cI use it to digest things, to do busy work.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a tool, essentially,\u201d Poveromo said. \u201cIt\u2019s not the answer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Soft skills<\/h4>\n

Jennifer Ortiz partitions her workday at Anaheim High School between teaching English and serving as the campus community schools teacher lead.<\/p>\n

The position, unique to the Anaheim Union High School District, focuses on \u201cgetting input from families, students, teachers and community members on the educational experience in order to make decisions around what is going to produce the best graduate.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the most pressing concerns Ortiz said she identified in the Class of 2026 is \u201cthe need for soft skills.\u201d The school district calls these attributes \u201cdurable skills,\u201d boiling them down to the \u201cfive C\u2019s:\u201d collaboration, communication, compassion, creativity and critical thinking.<\/p>\n

Poveromo recognizes this issue amongst her peers at Woodbridge High. \u201cThere\u2019s definitely a soft-skill gap,\u201d she said, \u201ceye contact, conflict resolution, public speaking, teamwork, even.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I think that\u2019s due to the pandemic and social media, the lack of face-to-face interaction,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

COVID-19 restrictions and precautions, for Poveromo and her peers, started in sixth grade, lasting through eighth grade.<\/p>\n

Limiting screen time at school has helped cultivate those soft skills, Ortiz said.<\/p>\n

\u201cLast year we talked about how phones and social media affect the brain and kids,\u201d she said. The average daily screen time for Anaheim High School students in 2025 was about 10 hours, Ortiz said.<\/p>\n

So \u201cthis year, the high school implemented an \u2018absolutely no cell phones in the classroom\u2019 policy,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Claudia Villalobos, an educational services coordinator with Cal State Fullerton\u2019s GEAR UP program, works with a cohort of about 50 students, including from Anaheim High. Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs focuses on \u201chaving students either be college-ready or career-ready.\u201d<\/p>\n

Practicing soft skills is pivotal to that preparation, Villalobos said. As part of the program, she practices everyday conversations with her students.<\/p>\n

Some scenarios include \u201chow to advocate for yourself, how to communicate with someone about trouble you\u2019re having with your assignments and the learning of that class,\u201d she said, adding she hopes those conversations \u201ctranslate going into a career, and how you talk to your employer about, for example, taking days off.\u201d<\/p>\n

In this digital age, where social media headlines and opinions often bleed into each other, the soft skills and students\u2019 capacity for civil discourse go hand in hand, Katz said. \u201cWe need to incentivize that kind of engagement.\u201d<\/p>\n

But that kind of interaction \u201cwas definitely hurt and continues to be hurt by social media and the pandemic,\u201d Poveromo said, mentioning a civics class that touched on the topic.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe read a study that said the Class of 2025 had the most violent fights on campus ever, and I think that says a lot,\u201d she said, \u201cbecause this is the age where you learn how to disagree respectfully, debate ideas without attacking people, and listening.\u201d<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the cost?<\/h4>\n

Ny Nguyen, 18, was torn between spending the next four years at UC Irvine or UC San Diego to study political science and economics, with the hopes of eventually attending law school.<\/p>\n

Her decision to attend UCI came down to the cost savings of living at home, she said. \u201cIf someone\u2019s taking the grad school route, they might as well just do community college or a cheaper school in undergrad.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ngo was at the same crossroads. He, too, chose to stay close to home.<\/p>\n

Villalobos said among her GEAR UP students, there are several who are foregoing higher education altogether because of the economics.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey want to go directly into the workforce,\u201d she said, \u201cand the conversation does revolve around the fact that they want to start early with their careers, because they feel like they can learn more being on the job, and they can learn with the new programming, the new technology.\u201d<\/p>\n

The priority is getting students college-ready, but Villalobos recognizes that \u201cnot all of our students are going to do that route.\u201d So, to equip students for either path, she encourages the soft skills: \u201cbeing adaptable, being resilient, communication, active listening.\u201d<\/p>\n

Recently, Orange County business and education leaders gathered to talk about whether a college degree could still give graduates an edge. A degree makes a candidate stand out, but diplomas alone don\u2019t make the cut, they said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have shifted from an attitude of looking at degrees as a credential and more to looking at degrees plus capabilities,\u201d Orange County Business Council President and CEO Jeff Ball said. \u201cWhen we think about how the market is changing, we need our employees to be dynamic. And the more educated they are, the more they have that foundation, the more they\u2019re going to be able to adjust with us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Poveromo isn\u2019t intimidated. Bright and by all means an academic go-getter, she\u2019s got a list of extracurriculars under her belt and has every intention of keeping the momentum up in college.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would totally join an academic frat, or they have a lot of culture clubs at my school. Maybe an Italian club. Maybe I\u2019ll join the tennis team,\u201d Poveromo said. \u201cAnd of course I\u2019m excited for the classes I\u2019m going to take.\u201d<\/p>\n

But for now, there are the last days to experience as a high schooler.<\/p>\n

There was just senior ditch day, and still yearbooks to sign and getting that diploma.<\/p>\n
