An Orange County entrepreneur and investor previously known for his fight to end poverty in California was sentenced to 14 years in prison Monday, June 1, after he pleaded guilty to defrauding investors and lenders of his Los Angeles-based startup of more than $248 million.<\/p>\n

A federal judge sentenced Joseph Neal Sanberg \u2014 co-founder of the environmentally conscious digital bank Aspiration that once attracted celebrity backers \u2014 after he pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud in October 2025.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors accused Sanberg, 46, of using his Aspiration stock to defraud investors and lenders from 2020 until 2025.<\/p>\n

Sanberg, who co-founded the financial firm with former political speechwriter and Navy officer Andrei Cherny, claimed to have invested nearly $100 million in Aspiration and, at one point, reportedly owned 35% of the startup. As the company hoped to go public in 2021, it attracted nearly $600 million from celebrity backers including Clippers owner and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert Downey Jr. and model Cindy Crawford.<\/p>\n

Aspiration once claimed to have 5 million users and offered fossil-fuel-free IRA investments, a debit card that offered cash back from \u201cconscience coalition\u201d companies and carbon offsets for gas purchases, according to a Forbes profile.<\/p>\n

News reports claimed the relationship between co-founders Sanberg and Cherny later soured before the latter was fired by the board, and Aspiration instead pivoted to selling carbon credits as company growth slowed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis serial fraudster used his Cinderella-like background, impressive educational credentials, and virtue signaling skills to swindle investors and lenders out of hundreds of millions of dollars,\u201d said First Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essayli in a statement. \u201cThis criminal case serves as a warning: Anyone can get duped by a con man.\u201d<\/p>\n

Between 2020 and 2021, prosecutors alleged Sanberg and Ibrahim AlHusseini, who also a member of Aspiration\u2019s board of directors and a co-defendant in the case, pledged shares of Sanberg\u2019s stock to fraudulently obtain $145 million in loans from two lenders. The pair also forged AlHusseini\u2019s bank and brokerage statements to inflate his assets by millions of dollars to help get the loans, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n

Starting in 2021, Sanberg recruited companies and investors to agree through letters of intent to pay tens of thousands of dollars a month for tree-planting services, according to federal officials. Sanberg hid from investors that he was actually the one paying millions for the services, leading Aspiration to falsely report higher revenue than the company had received, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors also accused Sanberg of defrauding investors and lenders using materials that falsely portrayed Aspiration\u2019s financial state, including a falsified letter from the company\u2019s audit committee saying Aspiration had $250 million in available funds when the company had less than $1 million available. Those falsified financial materials helped Sanberg obtain millions more in loans and investments in the company\u2019s securities, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n

Aspiration\u2019s fallout has also spurred an NBA investigation into salary cap allegations after the company signed Clippers star Kawhi Leonard to a four-year, $28 million marketing contract for which investigators allege he did no work.<\/p>\n

The investigation launched after podcaster Pablo Torre reported that Leonard took the sponsorship to circumvent the NBA\u2019s salary cap. Torre reported that Leonard\u2019s deal came around seven months after Clippers owner Ballmer invested $50 million in Aspiration personally in September 2021 and the team announced a $300 million sponsorship deal. Ballmer also reportedly invested another $10 million in March 2023.<\/p>\n

Ballmer lost all of his investment and the team lost most of its investment as well as more than $20 million that were held in escrow for more carbon offset purchases that had never been made, according to an ESPN report on a letter Ballmer\u2019s attorney submitted to a judge ahead of Sanberg\u2019s sentencing.<\/p>\n
