{"id":12310,"date":"2026-06-04T22:32:34","date_gmt":"2026-06-04T22:32:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/siliconvalleymovingpost.com\/?p=12310"},"modified":"2026-06-04T22:32:34","modified_gmt":"2026-06-04T22:32:34","slug":"surfers-healing-marks-milestone-30-years-of-helping-share-the-stoke","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/siliconvalleymovingpost.com\/?p=12310","title":{"rendered":"Surfers Healing marks milestone 30 years of helping share the stoke"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><p>Everyone understands they are all on the same board, riding the same wild, unpredictable waves.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/siliconvalleymovingpost.com\/?p=12294\">EU invests in ocean monitoring as US cuts funding<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And for the people who showed up to celebrate as Surfers Healing marked a milestone 30th anniversary on Wednesday, June 3, the day riding waves was also about reconnecting with old friends, making new ones, sharing the stoke with one another and relishing in a perfect afternoon of surf, sun and fun.<\/p>\n<p>The event, called One Perfect Day, was held at Doheny State Beach, the same spot where three decades earlier the nonprofit organization started its surf retreat for people on the autism spectrum.<\/p>\n<p>Izzy Paskowitz started the program alongside his wife, Danielle, after learning their son Isaiah was on the spectrum. (Photo by Mindy Schauer, Orange County Register\/SCNG)\n<\/div><span>Expand<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t believe how quickly 30 years have gone by,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>There were few autism resources available when Isaiah was a kid, and the family tried every \u201ctherapy\u201d they could find. One that put kids with autism in the water with dolphins in Key Largo wiped the family out of their life savings.<\/p>\n<p>But Paskowitz had a valuable realization from the trip: Water can be calming for a child on the spectrum. So he put his son on a surfboard, instantly seeing a difference.<\/p>\n<p>He remembers the first child who wasn\u2019t his own that he took out on a surfboard, and there was an instant gut feeling that they were doing something right, he said.<\/p> <div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThis is not easy, it\u2019s hard to get these kids in the water, but it felt so right,\u201d he said. \u201cYou feel that reward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Surfers Healing doesn\u2019t charge families who participate, and in many cases it can also be a healing experience for parents or siblings watching from shore.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of kids with autism have now surfed with the nonprofit, which makes several stops around the country throughout the year. There have been visits in Mexico and New Zealand, even.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, it\u2019s a labor of love,\u201d Paskowitz said, his son now 35 years old. \u201cThat is my motivation.\u201d<\/p> <div>\n<\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s taken him 30 years to figure things out, and he\u2019s an even worse businessman than his father, well-known surfer Dr. Dorian \u201cDoc\u201d Paskowitz, who never charged people for care, he said with a chuckle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always joke around, if I would have charged $5 each person, I would be doing fine in retirement,\u201d Izzy Paskowitz said.<\/p>\n<p>Paskowitz said his goal is to get to 50 years, and he suspects the next 20 will be easier than the first. He recently partnered with Spectrum Designs, a nonprofit business with 75% of its employees on the spectrum, to create T-shirts for fundraising, sold on the surfershealing.org\u00a0website.<\/p>\n<p>At the Doheny event, which marks the first stop in a series that will go around the country, participants came from as far as Tahoe and Arizona.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/siliconvalleymovingpost.com\/?p=12292\">Copilot of United jet that struck a light pole realized flight was low, but not in time: report<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Volunteer Shauna Ochs makes the annual trek from Palm Springs, a salt-water ritual the family now looks forward to each summer. She first discovered the program when her daughter Kylee, now 24, was just 8 years old.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s a water girl,\u201d she said of Kylee. \u201cThe beach is our thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But more than riding waves, it\u2019s about the community coming together, year after year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we go out and she\u2019s not cooperating, people just stare and they don\u2019t offer to help,\u201d Ochs said. But not with this community on the sand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody is judging anybody,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019re all in the same lives together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One Perfect Day is a chance for the families to relax and soak in the sights of watching their loved ones happy, enjoying the waves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s nothing better,\u201d Ochs said. \u201cThere\u2019s not a lot of words to describe it. She has so much fun. When we\u2019re here, she loves it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The swell came in strong at the event and waves were big, the shorebreak challenging surfers and volunteers.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Roberts marveled at how the surf coaches were able to navigate the pounding waves while trying to get his son Griffin, 28, out into the ocean, struggling as each wave came and tossed them around.<\/p>\n<p>But they didn\u2019t give up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt turned into a negative, where he didn\u2019t want to do it,\u201d Roberts said. \u201cYou don\u2019t want to leave on a negative note, you want to leave on a positive note. If you leave it on a negative, you\u2019re not going to do it again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several other surf coaches noticed and rushed to help get them pushed past the shorebreak and turn into just the right spot to ride a wave to shore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s overcoming your fears,\u201d Roberts said.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m really proud of him, he overcame it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>First-time surf volunteer Sam Deatherage was in awe watching the day of fun unfold on the sand and in the surf.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the most amazing opportunity to be here,\u201d said Deatherage, a Salt Creek surfer whose niece and neighbor both have special needs and who wanted to find just the right way to volunteer. \u201cGod put me here. It\u2019s really cool to watch these kids. \u2026 the waves are consistent and there\u2019s swell. Watching these instructors is inspiring. They are navigating through heavy shorebreak with the kids, it\u2019s a gift.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paskowitz calls the volunteers \u201chealers\u201d and said the turnout was incredible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the kids showed up, the waves showed up. The healers were amazing.
