JERUSALEM (AP) \u2014 Israel says Iran has launched missiles at it in the first such bombardment since a fragile ceasefire took effect in early April, complicating mediation efforts for a deal to end the war.<\/p>

Tehran had warned of retaliation after Israel on Sunday struck Beirut\u2019s southern suburbs in defiance of Washington\u2019s request days ago to stand down. Israel called it retaliation for the Iranian-backed Hezbollah firing at northern Israel earlier in the day.<\/p>\n

Israel\u2019s attack on Beirut came a few days after the Lebanese and Israeli governments agreed to a ceasefire in U.S.-hosted talks, though Hezbollah rejected the deal. The strike on a residential building killed two people and wounded 20, Lebanon\u2019s health ministry said.<\/p>\n

MREIJEH, Lebanon (AP) \u2014 Israel struck Beirut\u2019s southern suburbs without warning on Sunday, days after a ceasefire agreement in Washington went into effect and despite a U.S. request not to attack Lebanon \u2018s capital. Lebanon\u2019s health ministry said two people were killed and 20 wounded in the strike on a residential building.<\/p>\n

Iran had warned that an attack on Beirut would renew full-scale war across the Mideast, even as Pakistan tries to restart talks between Tehran and Washington. Iran wants a deal to include ending the war in Lebanon.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s powerful parliament speaker hinted at retaliation. \u201cThe (U.S.) naval blockade imposed against the Iranian people, together with Washington\u2019s green light today to the Zionist regime, makes U.S. and Israeli bases and assets in the region legitimate targets,\u201d Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf said on X.<\/p>

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s office said the strike was in retaliation for the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group firing at northern Israel earlier Sunday, and that Israel targeted \u201ccommand centers.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was no immediate White House comment. A senior U.S. official said \u201cwe were not surprised\u201d by the attack in Beirut. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, would not say if the U.S. had been given a heads-up on the strike.<\/p>\n
