DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) \u2014 The Iranian military\u2019s joint command said Monday it was halting its offensive operations, after Israel and Iran exchanged fire in their first attacks since the U.S. struck a ceasefire with Tehran two months ago.<\/p>

The escalation threatened to drag the Middle East back into\u00a0a full-scale war.<\/p>\n

The joint command said that if Israel or its supporters carried out any further \u201caggression and hostile acts,\u201d including in southern Lebanon, then \u201cmuch more severe and crushing measures than before will follow.\u201d<\/p>\n

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) \u2014 Israel and Iran traded fire early Monday in their first attacks since the U.S. struck a ceasefire with Tehran two months ago. The renewed hostilities threatened to drag the Middle East back into\u00a0a full-scale war.<\/p>\n

The war, launched by the U.S. and Israel on Feb. 28 with strikes on Iran, has\u00a0shaken the global economy, driven energy prices up around the world and made many basics,\u00a0including food, more expensive. Officials have been unable to turn\u00a0the April ceasefire\u00a0into a deal to permanently end the conflict.<\/p>\n

During the truce, Iran has maintained its stranglehold on the\u00a0Strait of Hormuz\u00a0\u2014 a crucial passage for the world\u2019s oil and natural gas whose closure was the primary reason global fuel prices skyrocketed. Israel has continued to strike Hezbollah, Iran\u2019s ally in Lebanon, and\u00a0pushed deeper into that country. And on Monday, Yemen\u2019s Houthi rebels, another Iranian ally, fired at Israel and warned they would target Israel-affiliated ships in the Red Sea.<\/p>

With little apparent progress in peace talks, Israel and Iran exchanging fire, and the\u00a0Houthis joining the fight, the risk of the war fully erupting again appeared higher than at any point since the ceasefire.<\/p>\n

In the wake of the new attacks, U.S. President Donald Trump wrote online: \u201cIsrael and Iran must immediately stop \u2018shooting.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

    Diplomats are racing to save the ceasefire<\/h4>\n

    Two regional officials said concerted diplomatic efforts were underway Monday to salvage the ceasefire.<\/p>\n

    Officials from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Pakistan and Qatar have urged the Trump administration to pressure Israel to rein in its strikes on\u00a0Iran and Beirut. They have also urged Iranian officials to stop attacks on Israel, they said. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters.<\/p>

    Trump said talks were ongoing for a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, though he gave no details.<\/p>\n
