The Chargers exercised the fifth-year option on wide receiver Quentin Johnston\u2019s contract, tying him to the team through the 2027 season. Johnston could have become an unrestricted free agent following the upcoming season, but he will remain one of Justin Herbert\u2019s top targets for the next two.<\/p>\n

The team announced the move Tuesday on social media and its website.<\/p>\n

Johnston, a first-round draft pick in 2023, was the Chargers\u2019 third-leading receiver last season with 51 receptions for 735 yards, averaging a team-leading 14.4 yards per catch. He also led the Chargers with eight touchdown catches, his second consecutive season with that many.<\/p>\n

The Chargers faced an NFL deadline on Friday to pick up Johnston\u2019s fifth-year option on his rookie contract, a four-year, $14.2-million deal he signed on May 11, 2023. He overcame a rocky rookie season in which he was better known for his drops than for his 38 catches for 431 yards and two TDs.<\/p>\n
