MEXICO CITY (AP) \u2014 The largest\u00a0World Cup in tournament history kicked off Thursday with co-host Mexico\u00a0taking on South Africa in the opening match.<\/p>

Amid escalating protests and\u00a0social tensions in Mexico\u2019s capital, more than 80,000 fans were making their way to Mexico City Stadium \u2014 better known as Azteca Stadium.\u00a0The iconic venue will be the first stadium to host three World Cup openers \u2014 after doing so in the 1970 and 1986 tournaments.<\/p>
