This has not been an easy time for NASCAR.<\/p>\n

The death of Kyle Busch four weeks ago is still affecting drivers and the entire sport.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened was shocking beyond belief,\u201d two-time and defending NASCAR champion Kyle Larson said Monday ahead of this weekend\u2019s races at Naval Base Coronado. \u201cI can\u2019t speak for everybody, but for myself, Kyle\u2019s death is still on my mind. It\u2019s hard to believe he\u2019s not here anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

Larson is far from the only driver struggling to cope with the loss of Busch. The 63-time Cup champion died May 21 after his severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis. He was 41.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think anyone recovers very quickly from something like this,\u201d said three-time champion Joey Logano. \u201cThese have been challenging moments for everyone. It\u2019s been tough to adjust to what the normal looks like.\u201d<\/p>\n

Said Larson: \u201cThe sport has done a good job of honoring Kyle while going on. He meant a lot for our sport. It\u2019s just hard not to see him at the track every week.\u201d<\/p>\n

And this weekend, NASCAR comes to Naval Station Coronado for an historic event. Sunday\u2019s Anduril 250 marks NASCAR\u2019s first race on a military base and the first-ever Cup race held in San Diego County.<\/p>\n

NASCAR\u2019s San Diego weekend is also a way to celebrate the nation\u2019s and the U.S. Navy\u2019s 250th birthday.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThis event is huge for us,\u201d Larson said. \u201cLast week at Pocono, you could feel the excitement of the anticipation around the garages, the pits. It\u2019s a huge opportunity and one that all of us in the sport are proud to take part in.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt gives us a chance to showcase our military and what they mean to us as an industry, a sport and individuals. As a group, we think it\u2019s going to be pretty awesome to race on a Naval base, plus having all the things that are probably going to come along with it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re pumped. I know the drivers are pumped. There\u2019s been a lot of talk. We\u2019re really excited to get onto the Coronado base this weekend. We\u2019re looking forward to a fun and memorable event, no matter how it turns out. It should be a good time for us for sure.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s more than a race. There\u2019s a bigger picture we\u2019re all going to be part of, including the servicemen who had welcomed us to their spot.\u201d<\/p>\n

And while former champions Larson, Denny Hamlin and Logano are stronger on ovals than road courses and temporary street courses like Coronado, all have expressed excitement about next Sunday\u2019s 255-mile race on the 3.4-mile, 16-turn circuit that will take Cup drivers past parked jets and helicopters and an aircraft carrier.<\/p>\n

\u201cI like challenges,\u201d Larson said, \u201cand this course will be a challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n

After a slow start to the season, Larson has steadily climbed back in the standings. He ran fifth Sunday at Pocono.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been pleased with the performance the past several weeks,\u201d said Larson. \u201cI\u2019m happy with the work and progress the team has made. We\u2019ll get a win here shortly.\u201d<\/p>\n

That recent progress has come on ovals where Larson is strongest. \u201cI\u2019m more confident on an oval,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve won on road courses. If we hit the balance right, we can do it. We\u2019re confident on ovals and road courses, too.\u201d<\/p>\n
