{"id":16604,"date":"2026-06-20T04:02:39","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T04:02:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/siliconvalleymovingpost.com\/?p=16604"},"modified":"2026-06-20T04:02:39","modified_gmt":"2026-06-20T04:02:39","slug":"lapd-releases-video-of-officer-fatally-shooting-dog-in-canoga-park-after-knicks-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/siliconvalleymovingpost.com\/?p=16604","title":{"rendered":"LAPD releases video of officer fatally shooting dog in Canoga Park after Knicks win"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>The Los Angeles Police Department on Friday released body-worn camera footage of the fatal shooting of a dog during a response to a Canoga Park residence where officers were investigating reports of a woman screaming in celebration of the New York Knicks\u2019 first NBA championship in 53 years.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/siliconvalleymovingpost.com\/?p=16602\">Here\u2019s a look at a few of the forgotten Founding Fathers<\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to the video and a department summary released Friday, officers responded about 8:55 p.m. Saturday to the 7500 block of Jordan Avenue after a neighbor reported hearing a woman repeatedly screaming, prompting a welfare check.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s been screaming \u2018Oh my god,\u2019 for 20 minutes, like something really bad happened,\u201d the 911 caller said.<\/p>\n<p><em>Warning; Some readers may find this video disturbing:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span><iframe allowfullscreen=\"true\" class=\"youtube-player\" height=\"360\" loading=\"lazy\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6G5qLm-qNv0?version=3&amp;rel=1&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;fs=1&amp;hl=en-US&amp;autohide=2&amp;wmode=transparent\" style=\"border:0;\" width=\"640\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The footage shows officers contacting the resident at her apartment door and repeatedly asking her to secure a large dog that was barking at them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, can you put your dog inside?\u201d an officer is seen telling the resident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJeez, that\u2019s a big ass dog,\u201d an officer is heard saying.<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Another officer says, \u201cI ain\u2019t getting bit by that, bro.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the LAPD, the resident briefly closed the door before reopening it moments later. An officer again asked if the dog was put away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s not aggressive,\u201d she responded.<\/p>\n<p>The department said the dog then emerged from the apartment, barked and charged toward an officer. Body-camera video shows an officer backing away. Seconds later, gunshots are heard and the dog collapses near the doorway, as the woman cries out, \u201cNo!\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The LAPD identified the dog as a 106-pound mixed breed. Activists and the dog\u2019s owner identified the animal as Jameson, a 2-year-old golden retriever-Saint Bernard and poodle mix. Jameson was reportedly wearing a Knicks shirt.<\/p>\n<p>According to a GoFundMe page that had raised more than $206,000 as of Friday afternoon, the dog\u2019s owner, Marie Marcel, was screaming with joy after the Knicks clinched their first NBA title since 1973 by defeating the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the NBA Finals.<\/p>\n<p>The release came ahead of a candlelight vigil outside LAPD headquarters Friday, where activists called for the identification of the officer involved and the release of additional records.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Karen Bass issued a statement Friday after viewing the body-worn camera footage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I saw on the bodycam footage is disturbing and tragic,\u201d Bass said. \u201cThe chief and I agreed that it was important to release the bodycam footage swiftly. While the investigation is ongoing, I am very concerned about why shots were fired and Jameson was killed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bass said the shooting demonstrates a need to review department policies governing encounters with dogs.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/siliconvalleymovingpost.com\/?p=16593\">Rescue dog Osito steals hearts at the World Cup, one bike ride at a time<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis shooting makes clear that while LAPD provides officers with written guidance on the use of force and pets, this is not enough,\u201d Bass said. \u201cI have directed the Police Commission President and the Chief to examine the Department\u2019s Use of Force policy on Dog Encounters to determine best practices from around the country, and use this opportunity to update the LAPD\u2019s overall tactics, policies, and training related to the use of lethal force to increase safety for everyone \u2014 officers, Angelenos and their pets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Najee Ali, director of Project Islamic Hope, said in a statement, \u201cThe video confirmed everything I said from the very beginning. (An) LAPD officer shooting and killing Jameson was unnecessary and unwarranted. All they had to do was turn around and leave once they determined the owner wasn\u2019t in danger. The death of Jameson was preventable with common-sense policing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell and Bass have vowed that a full investigation will be conducted into the fatal shooting of Jameson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe loss of a pet is deeply personal,\u201d Chief Jim McDonnell wrote in a statement on X earlier this week. \u201cFor many, a dog is not simply an animal; it is a companion, a source of comfort, and a member of the family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Video from the scene showed Marcel sobbing in grief and anger as she kneeled over her dying pet. She could be heard saying, \u201cHe\u2019s such a good dog!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, activists held a news conference outside LAPD headquarters to demand accountability in the case and on Wednesday McDonnell also said the shooting, which he called \u201can incredibly tragic incident,\u201d would be thoroughly and transparently investigated, a process already under way.<\/p>\n<p>McDonnell said the department has fielded numerous complaints following the shooting.<\/p>\n<p>The chief\u2019s statement went on to say that the investigation will take time, while acknowledging, \u201cWe at the LAPD know the community is hurting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLAPD officers face unknown dangers on a daily basis, but I expect them to exercise sound judgment, restraint and respect for life whenever possible.
