WEST SACRAMENTO \u2014 Angels manager Kurt Suzuki has a long history with A\u2019s manager Mark Kotsay that goes back to when they were both in the A\u2019s organization. They also attended the same college, Cal State Fullerton, which deepened their initial bond.<\/p>\n

\u201cZuk coming to (the A\u2019s) was exciting. To have a young player that went to CSFU, that in itself creates a bond. It started in \u201806 and continues to today,\u201d Kotsay said before Saturday\u2019s game. \u201cI look at Zuk like a younger brother. I love his growth, and where he\u2019s at today in the game, given the opportunity to manage a ballclub. I\u2019ve always said he sees the game in a way that can lead, and that\u2019s right where he\u2019s at.\u201d<\/p>\n

Suzuki feels similarly about the A\u2019s skipper, who said that Kotsay always looked after him when he was coming up through the team\u2019s farm system, and then when he made it to Oakland. He credits Kotsay for teaching him how to act the right way in the big leagues.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow it\u2019s coming full circle,\u201d Suzuki said this weekend. \u201cI\u2019m a manager, and he\u2019s been the manager for five years now. He\u2019s kind of giving me tips and stuff. It\u2019s so funny, cause I\u2019m like, \u2018man, you\u2019re always there to help me out.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Suzuki said on Friday that the biggest tip he\u2019d gotten from Kotsay was patience. An hour later Kotsay was ejected from the game for arguing balls and strikes.<\/p>\n

Even as a player, Suzuki could tell Kotsay was wired for it \u2014 the way he carried himself, the respect he commanded in the clubhouse.<\/p>\n

The Angels manager also heaped praise on his friend when asked what makes Kotsay special.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust the personality that he has. He can be hard on you \u2014 which I know firsthand \u2014 but you also realize that it\u2019s coming from a good place. A place of love, of care. You can\u2019t teach that.\u201d<\/p>\n

DETMERS DAY<\/strong><\/p>\n

The last time Reid Detmers faced the A\u2019s, he gave up eight runs on eight hits across 5 \u2154 innings, striking out six and walking two.<\/p>\n

Since that outing, he has allowed one or fewer runs in four of his five starts, racking up a 1.36 ERA \u2014 the fourth-best in MLB in that span.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s more consistency,\u201d Suzuki said when asked what\u2019s working for Detmers. \u201cObviously, execution. Earlier in the year there was a lot of foul balls, and I think now he\u2019s executing better.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also pointed to his ability to get first-pitch strikes more often. In his last start against the Arizona Diamondbacks, he recorded 19-of-24 first-pitch strikes for a rate of 79%.<\/p>\n

Detmers isn\u2019t letting the outing against the A\u2019s dictate what he\u2019s looking to do either.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was one bad game. It is what it is,\u201d Detmers said earlier this weekend.<\/p>\n

Kotsay didn\u2019t want to give too much away for how they\u2019re game-planning for the tough left-hander, but he mentioned that they\u2019d be looking into anything Detmers is doing differently since they last saw him.<\/p>\n

\u201cAny ball flight stuff that\u2019s changed, in terms of spin rates. Horizontal, vertical stuff to his pitches,\u201d Kotsay said of the A\u2019s approach to facing a pitcher on a hot streak. \u201cHe\u2019s throwing the ball well right now. The nature of the game is guys get going and they get into a rhythm and build confidence, and I think Detmers is one of those guys that has that right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Detmers will take the mound for the Angels looking to earn a series split for his team in an up- and-down series.<\/p>\n

NOTES<\/strong><\/p>\n

Getting Christian Moore up to speed in the outfield is going to take reps, according to Suzuki.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s such an athletic guy,\u201d Suzuki said before Sunday\u2019s game. \u201cI\u2019ve seen Alex Gordon switch from third base to left field with Kansas City and start off as not a very good outfielder. Then he became one of the best outfielders I\u2019ve ever seen and played against.\u201d<\/p>\n

The athleticism that Moore has showcased is getting him looks at different positions. So far in the big leagues he\u2019s played left field and second base these past two seasons, while he\u2019s also added some time at third base in the minors in that span.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t know where he\u2019s gonna be long term,\u201d Suzuki said Sunday. \u201cHe\u2019s still an infielder too. He plays all over. I think the work that he puts in, he\u2019s going to get better and better.\u201d \u2026<\/p>\n

Yusei Kikuchi (shoulder inflammation) is playing catch, according to Suzuki, though he\u2019s not sure how far along. \u2026<\/p>\n

Travis d\u2019Arnaud (plantar fasciitis) is still getting back to putting pressure on his foot.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know he was walking around with no boot,\u201d Suzuki said. \u201cI think he was doing stand-still hitting stuff, just not really moving, but standing up and kind of just using his hands.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Angels manager added that he\u2019d know more when the team returns home from the road trip, but that he\u2019s not expecting the catcher\u2019s return to be \u201csuper quick,\u201d due to the position that he plays.<\/p>\n
