(Photo by Paul Bersebach, Orange County Register/SCNG)

Expand

With the chicks at about 6 weeks old, Gough estimated it would be four or five more weeks before they would fledge and start to take flight. Before that, it’s baby steps in a process he called branching, where they drop to branches near the nest to try out their wings.

During this monitoring visit, one of the chicks was standing upright and looking around for mom and dad. The others were lying down in the nest; one had a wing outstretched along its side.

“They’re waiting for their parents to bring back food,” Gough explained, adding that red-tailed hawks hunt for prey starting at dawn until dusk. Mostly, they’re on the lookout for land mammals such as gophers and rabbits, though occasionally they will steal a fish. One rabbit could feed the three babies, Grough said. Mostly, they prefer the meat, and other parts are discarded.

Gough, his wife, Barb, and Linda Solomon are part of the conservancy’s volunteer troop participating in a monitoring program to ensure that raptors living in the thousands of acres of preserved natural space are thriving. It’s part of efforts to balance conservation with public access.

This particular hawk nest has been assigned to them for monitoring, and each week they strap on their rattlesnake guards — large canvas shields that cover the lower legs — and hike a little over a mile to reach it.

Red-tailed hawks, among the most prolific raptors on the former ranch land, along with great horned owls, barn owls, Cooper’s hawks, red-shouldered hawks and bald eagles are critical to the health of the area’s recovering ecosystem. As apex predators, the raptors help control rodent and small-mammal populations, thereby helping balance life in the wildlands.

By tracking the population, the conservancy builds a database of valuable insights into raptors and, in turn, gains a better understanding of the overall ecosystem. Data collected supports that the red-tailed hawk population in Orange County has remained stable, officials said.

Key to the monitoring program is identifying the area’s active nests, tracking breeding success and chick development, and ensuring the nests aren’t disturbed by the public. The conservancy works with Pete Bloom, a noted Orange County zoologist, who has monitored raptor nests in Southern California for decades.

The conservancy manages around 30,000 acres of land on behalf of OC Parks and the cities of Irvine and Newport Beach, stretching from as far inland as Weir Canyon in Anahiem Hills to the coast. This includes the nearly 25,000-acre Irvine Ranch Open Space owned by OC Parks, which was previously a part of the historic Irvine Ranch.

The raptor program is one of several wildlife monitoring programs conducted by the conservancy and its biologists, who team up with other institutions, such as UC Irvine and UC Davis, to study the area’s wildlife and ecosystem. Volunteers — there are more than 500 — are a valuable part of the conservancy’s programs, said Scott Graves, a spokesperson for the conservancy.

To get started, volunteers complete an orientation program and training hikes, after which they become certified as trail guides. After that initial training, they sign up for more specific tasks, such as becoming a docent, leading activities, or specializing in topics such as raptor monitoring. There is usually a waiting list, and orientations are held every four to six months.

As part of the monitoring programs, volunteers also pull data from the conservancy’s 30-plus wildlife cameras.

Read more Israeli airstrikes kill 5 in southern Lebanon as Hezbollah rockets hit open areas in Israel

“We document instances of larger wildlife like deer and bobcats, mountain lions, coyotes, skunks, and they track all of that information to get a sense of how the land is doing over time and if any wildlife patterns are changing,” Graves said. “They also do more specific monitoring, like the raptor monitoring program.”

Graves said keeping watch on the baby raptors is especially important because the nests are vulnerable now during the fledging season and some are located near hiking trails. The idea, he said, is to adjust public activity around them. About 10 to 20 different nesting sites are monitored in a year.

In addition to raptor monitoring, volunteers also participate in general bird counts, helping biologists at the conservancy determine how specific species are doing and identify species diversity.

During their recent visit, the three docents set up scopes to zoom in on the nest. It is perched high up in a sycamore tree at the base of Fremont Canyon. And, within seconds, Gough caught a glimpse of the upright baby chick, but no adults were around.

“We observe the birds and look at what’s going on with them, and then we have an app and enter all the information,” he said.

He looks for adults to make sure the chicks haven’t been left on their own and that no other birds are trying to interfere with the nest.

While the red-tailed hawks don’t have many predators, great horned owls don’t like to build nests and sometimes will try to kick the hawks out of theirs, he said. If the owls find the chicks alone, they might try to eat them, and if there are unhatched eggs, those are threatened.

The red-tailed hawk parents, who are known to mate for life, are in their second year of using this nest.

For Gough, a retired engineer from Foothill Ranch who has been part of the program for a decade and also volunteers with the Orange County Bird of Prey Center and other local groups, watching the new chicks gives him a sense of pride.

“It’s emotional,” he said. “It’s almost like keeping an eye on a second set of grandchildren.”

His favorite part of his work in nature is passing on what he learns to the next generation, he said.

“I really enjoy talking about nature to young ones so they can learn and appreciate things,” he said. “The No. 1 thing that kills raptors in Orange County is pesticides.
