TORONTO \u2014 The Angels are running out of catchers.<\/p>\n

They hope it won\u2019t be long, though.<\/p>\n

On the day that Travis d\u2019Arnaud was placed on the injured list because of right foot plantar fasciitis, Logan O\u2019Hoppe provided an optimistic update on his progress in a return from a fracture in his left hand.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no timetable for d\u2019Arnaud, who was hurt trying to beat out a ground ball on Wednesday. O\u2019Hoppe, however, seems to be close.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel great,\u201d O\u2019Hoppe said. \u201cGetting better by the day.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Hoppe said he was planning to catch pitches from the machine on Friday, the first time he\u2019d done that since he was hurt two weeks ago. He\u2019s been taking batting practice in the cage, and he planned to hit on the field before Friday\u2019s game.<\/p>\n

The last steps would be hitting game-speed velocity from a machine, and catching a live pitcher in the bullpen.<\/p>\n

O\u2019Hoppe said he\u2019s not sure if he\u2019ll go out for a rehab assignment.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s day-to-day,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t know. Some days it\u2019s worse than others. So far it\u2019s progressively all gotten better by the day, so I\u2019m not completely sure yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Hoppe said he\u2019s planning to come back, even if there\u2019s still some discomfort.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not waiting by any means to not feel anything,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen it feels good enough to go then I\u2019m going to go, even if it doesn\u2019t feel great.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the meantime, the Angels called up 24-year-old Omar Martinez for his first time on a major league roster. He joins Sebastian Rivero, who was in the starting lineup for his 54th career big league game on Friday.<\/p>\n

Martinez spent his entire pro career in the New York Yankees\u2019 system before the Angels signed him to a minor league deal last November.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we look at videos and stuff, he could catch,\u201d said Angels manager Kurt Suzuki, a former catcher. \u201cCatch and throw and and stuff like that. It was as advertised in spring training. \u2026 It\u2019s an exciting time for him, first time getting called up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Martinez, a left-handed hitter, was hitting .212 with a .731 OPS at Triple-A.<\/p>\n

PITCHING UPDATES<\/h4>\n

Right-hander Ben Joyce, who is rehabbing from shoulder surgery, is scheduled to pitch again for Class-A Rancho Cucamonga on Saturday. It would be his fifth game for Rancho Cucamonga.<\/p>\n

Joyce has allowed one earned run in four innings, with five strikeouts and three walks.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s better and better every time,\u201d Suzuki said. \u201cWe\u2019ll see after tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n

Right-hander Grayson Rodriguez is also scheduled to start for Rancho Cucamonga on Sunday. It would be his first game with a full-season team since 2024, when he last pitched for the Baltimore Orioles.<\/p>\n

Rodriguez has had a string of injuries and he had a bone spur removed in August. The Angels slowed him down this spring once he reported some general soreness, and now they\u2019re essentially having him repeat spring training. He is expected to throw six innings or about 90 pitches on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Right-hander Ryan Johnson was scheduled to start for Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday night at Oklahoma City. Johnson started the season in the major league rotation, but he missed a start with an illness and then hurt his hamstring.<\/p>\n
