Voting is already underway in California\u2019s primary election \u2014 but if you haven\u2019t received a ballot in the mail or registered to vote, it\u2019s not too late.<\/p>\n

Monday, May 18, is the last day to register to vote in the primary election.<\/p>\n

You can do so online, at registertovote.ca.gov, or at a county elections office, DMV field office or many post offices, libraries and government offices.<\/p>\n

You must be a U.S. citizen and California resident and at least 18 years old as of June 2.<\/p>\n

And you will need your California driver\u2019s license or identification card, date of birth and last four digits of your Social Security number to register.<\/p>\n

That information will be checked with DMV records, and if found \u2014 and you authorize it \u2014 your signature on file with the DMV will be added to your voter registration application.<\/p>\n

If your records aren\u2019t found, you will need to print and sign a paper application and mail it.<\/p>\n

In both cases, your county elections official will need to verify your voter registration application and will let you know whether your application is approved or if more information is needed, according to the California secretary of state.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo matter how you turn in your registration application \u2014 online or paper \u2014 when it comes to determining a person\u2019s eligibility to vote, preventing duplicate registrations, and adding a person to California\u2019s official voter rolls, all the same safeguards are in place,\u201d the secretary of state\u2019s website says.<\/p>\n

If you do not have a California ID or a Social Security number, you will be assigned a unique identifier with your voter registration, per the secretary of state.<\/p>\n

Not sure if you\u2019re registered to vote? Checking is easy.<\/p>\n

Head over to voterstatus.sos.ca.gov, where you\u2019ll input your first and last names as well as your date of birth, driver\u2019s license or state ID number and Social Security number.<\/p>\n

The website will let you know if you are registered to vote. But it will also show you where you\u2019re registered to vote, help you find your polling place, show your political party preference and language preference for election materials, and let you know the status of your vote-by-mail or provisional ballot.<\/p>\n

Those who are currently serving time in a state or federal prison for a felony conviction or who have been found mentally incompetent to vote by a court are prohibited from registering to vote.<\/p>\n

Those enrolled in the Safe at Home confidential address program should contact the program to inquire about registering to vote confidentially.<\/p>\n

And if you miss the May 18 deadline, don\u2019t fret: You can still participate in the June 2 primary election.<\/p>\n

California has what\u2019s called \u201cconditional voter registration.\u201d Eligible citizens are able to register or re-register to vote at their county elections office, polling place or vote centers and cast a ballot. Those ballots won\u2019t be processed and counted, however, until the county elections office has verified the voter\u2019s registration application.<\/p>\n
