That’s just basketball.

“My goal is to play like this the whole year, in terms of just trying to be very patient and take what the defense gives us.”

The Sparks inserted veteran point guard Erica Wheeler into the starting lineup Friday, and that decision, which moved Plum to shooting guard, paid off immediately. The Sparks outscored Toronto 21-2 in the first five minutes of the game and shot 64% from the field for the night in a wire-to-wire victory at Crypto.com Arena.

“It looked really good,” Wheeler said. “It felt good as a collective.”

They finished with 26 assists on their 37 made field goals and had a 54-30 scoring advantage in the paint.

“That’s how we want to play,” Sparks coach Lynne Roberts said. “Now if we can sure up defensively and just be a little bit tighter. Reserve forward Cameron Brink added 10 points in 16 minutes.

“It’s a true point guard at that spot,” Roberts said before the game. “The one thing the last couple of games, we just have not been organized offensively very well, and so hopefully we can just play a little more organized. It’s a work in progress.”

The Sparks (1-2), who gave up 57 points in the second half, saw their lead trimmed to 89-87 with 2:26 left on a driving layup by former Spark Brittney Sykes, who matched Plum with 27 points. Ogwumike’s three-point play made it a two-possession game again at 92-87 with 2:06 remaining, but Toronto wasn’t done.

The Tempo, who had trailed by 20 in the third quarter, cut the margin to three on three free throws (one technical) with just under a minute left. Plum made a pair of free throws with 13.8 seconds left and Brink added two more with 8.9 left to make it 99-93 and secure the win.

“You can’t lose three in a row,” Plum shared. “I don’t care who you’re playing.”

Kelsey Plum on her game-highs 27 points and 9 assists in the Los Angeles Sparks’ first win of the season.

LA Sparks defeated the Toronto Tempo 99-95 at home. pic.twitter.com/ZkBdkyREDx

— John W.
