{"id":9217,"date":"2026-05-26T04:02:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-26T04:02:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/siliconvalleymovingpost.com\/?p=9217"},"modified":"2026-05-26T04:02:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-26T04:02:08","slug":"big-blast-averted-so-far-in-garden-grove-but-smaller-explosion-could-pose-danger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/siliconvalleymovingpost.com\/?p=9217","title":{"rendered":"Big blast averted, so far, in Garden Grove, but smaller explosion could pose danger"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Although the Orange County Fire Authority has ruled out the threat of a highly destructive pressurized explosion at an aerospace plant in Garden Grove, the area remains at risk of a smaller but potentially dangerous blast or a spill.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/siliconvalleymovingpost.com\/?p=9215\">Updated map shows Garden Grove chemical threat and reduced evacuation zone<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since Thursday, May 21, when workers at GKN Aerospace reported problems in a tank containing methyl methacrylate, also known as MMA \u2014 a flammable, volatile chemical used in plastics and manufacturing \u2014 OCFA officials have been working to mitigate what they deemed a \u201cworst-case\u201d scenario, a \u201cboiling liquid expanding vapor explosion,\u201d or \u201cBLEVE.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, May 25, fire officials said a BLEVE blast is \u201coff the table,\u201d because a crack in the container has helped to lower the chemical\u2019s temperature. But they also said that they still have questions about what the state of the MMA and what danger it might still pose.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also see:<\/strong> What a crack in the tank means, and why liquid nitrogen is a bad idea<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe MMA is still in the container. We don\u2019t know how much is solidified and (how much is) still in its liquid form\u2026 When it\u2019s in liquid form, it is still very hazardous, it\u2019s still very volatile and dangerous to human health,\u201d said OCFA Fire Captain Brian Yau by phone Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Yau said there are currently two threats: the flammability of the MMA, which could lead to a small-scale explosion, and the risk of vapor leaking from the tank and exposing the population to a chemical that that can cause respiratory problems, dizziness and nausea.<\/p>\n<p>In liquid form, MMA is still flammable and can generate heat on its own, Yau said.
