Health officials on Sunday, July 5, re-opened a stretch of coast in Laguna Beach that had been closed for most of the July 4th holiday weekend due to a sewage spill.

The Orange County Health Care Agency’s Environmental Health Division closed a quarter-mile of coastline in each direction at Anita Street at Thalia Beach on Thursday, July 2, after a sewer pump malfunction and spilled about 2,000 gallons of sewage into the water. The agency said then that the area would remain closed to ocean water contact sports for at least three days and until water quality met acceptable standards.

OCHCA officials posted Sunday on X that officials had re-opened the stretch after bacterial levels had met health standards.
