Breans are really lucky, especially those of us who love to shop.
While shopping malls all over the country have closed down and become ghost towns, some are being given new life when apartments crop up in place of department stores, specialty shops and the food courts.

Our 1,281,795-square-foot Brea Mall is evolving from more than a place to shop and dine thanks to an outdoor, park-like area named “Sunset Green.”
Sunset Green welcomes you with tables and seating, play spots for the kids and lots more.
Maybe you and your family enjoyed the July 3 America’s 250th anniversary celebration at Sunset Green, with free ice cream. If you didn’t, don’t worry. There will be many more fun events all summer long.
I love the idea of a park within the mall property. Dad can take the kids to play at the Sunset Green while Mom cruises the more than 185 shops, including Nordstrom’s, JCPenney’s and the two Macy’s. Not bad.
There are also the new Williams Sonoma and Pottery Barn shops outdoors plus several other retailers and restaurants surrounding Sunset Green. Or have a meal at Pacific Catch, North Italia or The Melt. And over the next few months, expect more places to eat and shop around the Sunset Green park-like area.
Another exciting addition to Brea Mall’s outdoor offerings is the huge Life Time fitness center, or what they call an athletic country club, located across Brea Mall Road from the Sunset Green shops and Nordstrom’s.
Life Time opens today, July 9, but I got a preview of it last week. It is like no other fitness center I’ve seen.
The two-story, 85,000-square-foot center features several different types of workout areas in separate large rooms, reformers, plus indoor spas, a Beach Club with two outdoor pools with lifeguards.
The larger pool features a huge water slide. The Beach Club area also has cabanas, towel service and plenty of chaise lounges plus tables and chairs and a poolside cafe.

Love pickle ball? Life Time has pickle ball courts both outside and inside the building.
Something that I expect will be very popular with families is the Kids Academy, for children 3 months to 11 years old. No, the babies and older kids are not in the same room. There are separate rooms for infants, tots and one for older kids that has a kids’ size rock-climbing wall.
Also unlike gyms I’ve seen, Life Time has a café and bar just for members, plus the poolside café. Also included is a work lounge with large tables and free Wi-Fi.
Other amenities included at extra charge are a chiropractor plus a spa for hair, nails and massages.
Life Time is a great addition to Brea Mall and our city.

Maybe it’s time for you to join a gym to get in shape, especially if you are thinking of running for office this fall. All that campaigning and walking the neighborhoods to garner potential voters takes a lot of energy and you need to be in good shape.
If you are interested in running for city, county or state office there is information on the City’s website Document Center. The time to file your nomination papers is July 13 to Aug. 7.
If any of the incumbents do not file nomination papers by then, the period extends to Aug.12 at 5:30 p.m.
