9/11 – Through the Heart, 25 years after

On Sept. 20, 2001, reporter Andre Mouchard was in Manhattan with former Orange County Register photographer Bruce Strong, to start the reporting for a story called “Through the Heart.” For the rest of the month, they drove from New York to Southern California, talking with people in small towns and other places about people they lost on 9/11 and their lives in the new, post-attack America.

25 years later, Andre as well as Southern California News Group photographer Jeff Gritchen and reporter Sierra van der Brug are embarking on a new version of that Sept. 11 assignment. Follow them as they drive across the country to New York for the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks.
MEET THE TEAM
Southern California News Group projects editor Andre Mouchard, left, reprises the trip he took in 2001 following the 9/11 attacks, only this time he’s doing it in reverse. He is joined by crime and public safety reporter Sierra van der Brug, who was not born at the time of the attacks, and innovative photographer Jeff Gritchen, a licensed drone pilot who once improvised to shoot fire devastation from a 30-foot painter’s pole when drones were grounded.
