In California’s 38th Congressional District, Hilda Solis and Pedro Antonio Casas were in strong positions to advance to the general election when early results were posted Tuesday night.

This district, which spans Los Angeles and Orange counties saw four contenders vie for the open seat. Pico Rivera Councilmember Erik Lutz, Pico Rivera Councilmember Monica Sanchez and L.A. County Supervisor Solis are Democrats, while psychologist Casas is a Republican.
Casas is a retired colonel in the U.S. Army, where he worked as a division psychologist in South Korea and in behavioral health departments at medical centers around the country, according to his campaign website. He received his Ph.D. in counseling psychology from UC Santa Barbara.

Lutz was first elected to the Pico Rivera City Council in 2020 and has served a stint as the town’s mayor. He is a longtime real estate broker, owning his own firm that provides both commercial and residential services.
Sanchez, too, serves on the Pico Rivera City Council, where she is now the mayor pro tem. She works as an educator for the Los Angeles County Office of Education, and has served on the city’s Planning Commission as well as the Parks and Recreation Commission.
A longtime member of the L.A. County Board of Supervisors, Solis represents the 1st District. She is a former congresswoman who also served as labor secretary during the Obama administration.

This is a bit of a new district after redistricting and was considered an open seat since Rep. Linda Sánchez opted to run for reelection in a new nearby area where her home is located.
California’s 38th Congressional District includes Commerce, El Monte, La Habra Heights and Montebello in L.A. County, sweeping down to pick up Yorba Linda in Orange County.
Nearly 45% of voters in this district are registered Democrats, while almost 25% are no party preference voters and about 24% are Republicans.
In California, the top two vote-getters, regardless of party, will advance to the general election in the fall.
