TOLUCA, Mexico — LAFC’s bid for a third trip to the CONCACAF Champions Cup final was denied with a lopsided loss south of the border.

Sparked by second-half goals from Helinho and Everardo López, Toluca scored four times in the second half and pulled away to beat LAFC, 4-0, on Wednesday night, setting up an all-Mexican title match against UANL Tigres.

Helinho converted a penalty shot in the 49th minute and del Villar doubled the lead in the 58th.

Portuguese striker Joao Paulo Dias “Paulinho” added two goals in stoppage time for the Red Devils, who clinched the semifinal series 5-2 on aggregate after LAFC took the opener, 2-1, on a stoppage-time goal last week at BMO Stadium.

This will be the first all-Mexican final in the continental tournament since 2021, when Monterrey defeated Club América.

Regardless of who wins the May 30 title match, a Mexican team will take home the championship trophy for the 20th time in the past 21 years. The only exception in that span was the Seattle Sounders’ title run in 2022.

Toluca will be aiming for a third title in the tournament, and first since 2003 when it beat Morelia in another all-Mexican final.

On Wednesday, Toluca got a chance to pull level on aggregate when LAFC’s Ryan Hollingshead was called for a foul in the 18-yard box shortly after halftime. Helinho powered in a left-footed penalty kick in the 49th minute.

López gave Toluca what proved to be the decisive goal on an individual effort less than 10 minutes later. He intercepted a pass as LAFC tried to play out of its defensive third, then took one touch and fired a 28-yarder into the right side of the net. LAFC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris didn’t even move for the ball, as he had no chance of making the save.

LAFC finished the match with 10 players after Ryan Porteous was sent off in the 88th minute for a foul that denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.

Toluca took advantage of playing a man up, as Paulinho scored his pair of stoppage-time goals.

LAFC was seeking a third trip to the final in its fourth tournament appearance. The club also reached the Champions Cup final in 2020 and 2023, losing both.

Toluca won despite the absence of two of its Mexico national team players, Alexis Vega and Jesús Gallardo, who had to join the national squad preparing for the World Cup.
