After more than 17 years at UC San Francisco, the UC Global Health Institute is moving its headquarters locally to UC Irvine‘s Joe C. Wen School of Population & Public Health.

The UC Global Health Institute was founded in 2008, connecting the 10 UC campuses under the shared mission of advancing health equity, research and education.
The organization spans six academic health centers, 21 health professional schools and services University of California employees, faculty and students.
The institute has pioneered systemwide programs including on gender and health justice, global health education and planetary health and is behind several student internships and programs, such as the GloCal Health Fellowship.
“The University of California Global Health Institute embodies the very best of the UC system: collaboration across disciplines, campuses and communities in pursuit of solutions to society’s most pressing challenges,” Wen Public Health Founding Dean Bernadette Boden-Albala said. Boden-Albala has served on the institute’s advisory council since 2021.

“We are proud that UC Irvine has been selected as the institute’s new administrative home and look forward to supporting its continued growth and impact,” Boden-Albala said. “This transition reinforces our commitment to advancing health equity, fostering innovation and strengthening partnerships that improve lives both here in California and around the world.”
The Joe C. Wen School of Population & Public Health is Orange County’s only dedicated school of public health and the fourth in the UC system. It launched in 2024, backed by a $50 million donation by philanthropist Joe C. Wen.
“The move of the UC Global Health Institutes administrative home to UC Irvine is incredibly exciting. UC Irvine is already a top-tier STEM, health sciences, and public health university with a track-record of impactful science,” said Dr. Madhavi Dandu, a professor of medicine at UC San Francisco who has been leading the UC Global Health Institute since 2022.
“Now with closer collaboration with (the institute), UCI faculty and staff will be able to amplify their work to an even larger national and global audience. In addition, they will be more readily able to host collaborative opportunities that result in cross-campus educational and research programs,” Dandu said. “We are excited for what the future holds.”
