Kevin McCaffrey has been dismissed as the baseball coach at Corona del Mar High, McCaffrey confirmed Wednesday.

McCaffrey coached the Sea Kings for eight seasons. This past season Corona del Mar finished 15-14 overall and was 7-11 in the Sunset League. The Sea Kings beat Bishop Amat, 2-1, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section playoffs before losing to Fullerton, 7-6, in the second round.
McCaffrey was 121-81-2 in his eight seasons, with three league championships.
He said he will continue at Corona del Mar as a physical education teacher.
He said he was told Tuesday in a meeting with the school principal and athletic director that he would no longer be the baseball coach.

McCaffrey said it was explained to him that the program was not making sufficient progress.
“We overachieved so much this year,” McCaffrey said. “We had only 13 players and we’re playing in the best public-school league in the county.”

Tuesday was McCaffrey’s 46th birthday.
His father Tom McCaffrey was the baseball coach at El Toro High for many years.
