The Angels made a sweeping change to their coaching staff by firing pitching coach Mike Maddux, assistant pitching coach Darryl Scott and bullpen coach Dom Chiti on Tuesday.

Tim Leveque has been named interim pitching coach and Michael Wuertz has been named interim bullpen coach. Leveque was the pitching coach at Double-A Rocket City and Wuertz was the minor league assistant pitching coordinator.

Interim general manager John Mozeliak and manager Kurt Suzuki are scheduled to address the moves at the ballpark Tuesday afternoon.

“After spending time discussing with Kurt where we are as a coaching staff and where we want to go in the future, we felt it was best to make a change,” said Mozeliak. “With seven weeks remaining, we plan to use this time to evaluate what additional steps are needed to elevate our entire pitching program and best position us for success moving forward.”

Maddux is a veteran of 24 years as a major-league pitching coach, and he’s widely regarded as one of the best in the industry, but the Angels rank 24th in the majors with a 4.51 ERA.
