Edison girls flag football coach Frank Phung will miss the Chargers’ CIF-SS Open Division playoff game Saturday against Sierra Canyon because he was ejected in the final game of the regular season, he confirmed Monday.

Phung said he received the one-game suspension for two unsportsmanlike penalties in a 19-6 victory at the Western Christian on Oct. 14.

Edison (21-6), seeded eighth in the Open Division, plays host to No. 12 Sierra Canyon (20-5) in Pool A on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Pool A begins Wednesday with No. 1 JSerra (24-0) playing host to Sierra Canyon at 5 p.m.

Phung said Ulises Lua will coach the Chargers in his absence with David Harrison serving as offensive coordinator.

“The girls will be ready,” Phung said. “I’m excited for them.”

Edison closes play in Pool A at JSerra on Oct. 28.

The winner of the three-team group advances to the semifinals Oct. 31.

The Chargers closed the regular season by winning 14 of 15 games. They placed third in the Sunset League behind No. 2-seeded Newport Harbor and No. 4 Huntington Beach.

Edison features two senior starters in Sadie Olivares and Preslee Thomas.
