Demolition has started on the former Kmart in Riverside’s Mission Grove Area to make way for a 347-unit apartment project.

Under the plan approved by the Riverside City Council in 2024, the project at 375 Alessandro Blvd. will include 24 studio apartments, 133 one-bedrooms, 180 two-bedrooms and 10 three-bedrooms, as well as 513 parking spaces.

The project includes five buildings, each four stories, with apartments ranging from 576 square feet to 1,368 square feet.
Once demolition is complete, construction is expected to take 28 months. Doors on the complex were initially expected to open in 2027, but are now likely to open in late 2028.

The store has been vacant since closing in 2018, though Kmart owned the property until 2021.
Riverside’s two other Kmart stores, on Iowa Avenue and Arlington Avenue, closed in 2017. In 2019, the Sears on Arlington Avenue followed.
