DETROIT — Nolan Schanuel’s sore left calf hasn’t progressed the way he or the Angels had hoped.

The first baseman was out of the lineup again on Tuesday, three days after he aggravated the nagging injury. The injured list is now looking like a possibility.

“It’s doing alright,” Schanuel said on Tuesday. “I woke up yesterday and it was feeling a little tight. I got some treatment yesterday. Woke up this morning, still kind of bugging me. Been trying to run on it a little bit, seeing how it’s feeling. It’s a little bit aggravating. Not only that, but just for me trying to be out there and be able to compete. It just sucks.”

Manager Kurt Suzuki, who dismissed the idea of the injured list on Sunday, said on Tuesday that they’ve “thought about it a little bit.”

For now, though, they are still hoping that he doesn’t need the full 10 days he’d have to be out if he goes on the IL. He could be placed on the IL retroactive up to three days, so he’d have to miss at least seven more from the day the transaction is made.

“We’ll give him another day and see how he feels after some treatment today and another day of rest,” Suzuki said. “Obviously, I’d like for him to feel better right now. We’ll see how he is.”

Schanuel said the calf has been nagging him for most of the season, since around the time when he hurt the ankle on the same side while running the bases on April 4. He acknowledged the leg issues have contributed to his offensive numbers being slightly down.

COOLING OFF

Vaughn Grissom, who started at first in place of Schanuel on Sunday and Tuesday, has just two hits in his last 28 at-bats. His batting average is down to .214 and his OPS is down to .632.

Suzuki nonetheless had him in the No. 3 spot, which had been Schanuel’s batting order position.

“Results-wise, he’s definitely cooled off, but I feel like one or two times a game he hits the ball hard right at somebody, gets a line drive caught or, or something like that,” Suzuki said. “Yeah, we all want the results. He probably wants more results, but I think the work, the at-bats that he’s given has, has definitely been positive. The results, not so positive. But I think everything that he’s doing, if he stays with it, it’ll turn soon.”
