HUNTINGTON BEACH — New Servite football coach Rick Garretson has named his offensive and defensive coordinators.
Garretson, who was hired by his alma mater in February, said his son Darell will coordinate the Friars’ offense and Chris Redfern will run the defense.
Redfern, a former assistant at Golden West College, emerged as the Friars’ defensive coordinator in 2024 under then Servite coach Chris Reinert.
“I let my guys coach,” Rick Garretson, 69, said at the Battle at the Beach passing tournament at Edison on July 11. “I got a 33 and 32-year-old who really know their stuff.”
“Darell played quarterback at Utah State and Oregon State,” he added of his son, who also coached at the University of Arizona. “(Redfern) did some really good things last year.”

Garretson said veteran assistant Frank Kalil will coach the offensive line.
Servite went 0-4 at the Battle at the Beach. The Friars fell to Lincoln 22-21, Santa Margarita 20-14, Long Beach Poly 21-19 and Capistrano Valley 22-13.
Despite the losses, Garretson remained upbeat. He said the Friars weren’t full strength and are re-connecting with their skills players from the school’s state champion boys track team.
“It’s been refreshing,” Garretson said of his return to Servite. “I love coaching the boys.”
Servite opens the season Aug. 22 at Corona Centennial.
Garretson’s previous school — Chandler of Arizona — lost to Centennial 56-49 in 2016 and 35-13 in 2018.
