The Omicron variants that have been driving the latest wave tend to produce a set of symptoms similar to a bad cold or influenza. Loss of taste and smell is less common than with previous variants, while an intensely painful sore throat is more common, medical professionals say.
The “razor blade throat” also was frequently reported during the summer 2025 surge.

In general, the disease is less severe than with earlier variants.
The most common symptoms:
- Fever or chills
- Cough
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Sore throat
- Congestion or runny nose
- Fatigue
- Body aches
- Headache
If you perform an at-home COVID test because of symptoms and get a negative result, it’s recommended that you test again 48 hours later to be sure.
The vaccine updated for the latest strains is expected to be available this fall.
